Nintendo

Nintendo was at E3 without a press conference They held a Nintendo Direct on their site.
Now they were a bit to fast and their stream did skipp and hop a bit so pardon me if I don't have all the games  or system they belong on.

But here goes what I did catch.

Pokemon X and Y for 3DS
Super Mario 3D World for Wii U
Mario Kart 8 for Wii U
Wii Party U and Wii Fit U
Art Academy for Wii U (drawing thing)
Disney Infinity
Just Dance 2014
Rayman Legends
Scribblenauts Masked
Shin Megami TV
Skylanders Swap Force
Watch Dogs
Splinter Cell Black List
A bunch of eShop titles (so fast I could not catch them)
The Legend of Zelda Windwaker HD
The Wonderful 101 from Platinum Gmaes
Bayonetta 2
Smash Bros for both 3DS and Wii U
And something they called X (could it be Xeno game?)

Good line up in general. Presentation leaves a lot to be desired. Too bloody fast! and a stream of low quality.
Overall a D

Other than this E3 has consited of showcasing the games, interviews, features and general developer talk and overall just sharing the games with us.

Great cracking E3!
Can't wait to play some of this!

E3 2013

It's A Thing. Respect The Thing.

E3 2013 happened this week as you may have gathered from my last post. I hope you listened to the  BritCast I shared there featuring David and Luke with me as guest, with predictions and a bit of silly banter.
There will be a follow up.

So I watched about 90% (I needed a few breaks) of the entire livestream Gametrailers had, supplemented by Gamespot links provided by E3's official Twitter, as the livestream got very blurry at times and I wanted to see what the games looked like. I watched most of the press conferences on the E3 provided links. I also watched the Nintendo Direct, Day 2,which was fine for the most part but got a bit skippy hoppy.

Overall a great E3 coverage with tons of great stuff that I'm very keen on.

Day 1

Before the MicroSoft presser Lego Marvel Super Heroes was announced along with Rare's new title Kinect Sports Rivals. Lego really does all the geek franchises, which is fine as those games can be a lot of silly fun. Rare's game.. Yeah.. The company that once was a power house, with legendary titles such as Golden Eye 007, now just making basically mini games collections. Sad.

MicroSoft

The conference kicks off with Metal gear Solid V The Phantom Pain and Hideo Kojima, that looked awesome (non-exclusive title). Followed by Xbox Live talk. Now we'll get two free games each month with our Gold memberships. Not specified if Europe and US will get the same offer.
Next up World of Tank 360 Edition, Free to play exclusive to 360, followed by Max And The Curse Of Brotherhood from Press Play( XBLA exclusive) and Dark Souls II from Namco Bandai (360, PS3 and PC).
MicroSoft Studios segment (all exclusive) with Ryse Son of Rome from Crytek, Killer Instinct by Double Helix, F2P with one character, the rest you much buy.
Sunset Overdrive by Insomniac Games a loony cartoony shooter with energy drinks? as ammo.
A bit of car porn courtesy of Forza 5 by Turn 10 Studios a solid racer, now with Drive-atar.
Remedy brought Quantum Break, Xbox One exclusive, I have no idea what it is yet. Looks tasty though.

Xbox One will feature the Twitch streaming service for game streaming and MS points is gone to be replaced by real currency pricing.

Crimson Dragon by Grounding, Inc.Land Ho! Co. Ltd a Kinect on rail shooter (fail on audio missing in stream).
Dead Rising 3 the zombie apocalypse exclusive to Xbox One, that seem to have lost it's humor from it predecessors.

The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt by CD Project Red, will also be on PC, looks awesome!
Titanfall from Respawn Entertainment, also on PC, looks like tons of fun, FPS, Jet packs and Mechs.
Battlefield 4 (a false start) by Dice, Xbox One, PS4, PC. looks cool but kinda standard.

Indie titles such as Minecraft and Below was also present.

MS confirmed always on, check in ever 24 hours, game DRM to be determinded by publishers but the messaging was still unclear exactly what they really mean.

And Halo 5 was teased.

And Don Mattick response (in a interview post presser with Geoff Keighley of GT) to people not able to be online all the time "get a 360" (Smooth.. Not).

Price: 499$/499€/429£

Overall a good presentation with good titles ovarall. Though some of the "killer apps" aren't even truly exclusive.(to me a true exclusive is only on one platform i.e not PC as well)
I give them a B-

In between MS and EA we were presented with Saint's Row IV from Volition Inc. Same loony style, Now you're the US president powered by super powers brought by aliens. *Teal'c eyebrow*
Looks like good silly fun.
Thief from Eido Montréal a reboot of the orignal game series by Looking Glass Studios/Ion Storm. Looks alright I guess, a bit generic sneaky sneaky.

EA

Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare from Pop Cap a Team Fortress like thing based on the Plants vs Zombies games, looked like fun. And Peggle 2 (how is that going to be improved?) announced with a jump.

Titanfall out on stage. Still keen.

Dice Frostbite with Star Wars Battlefront teased and Battlefront 4.. Looks fun.
Dragon Age Inquisition by Bioware is a thing.

Need For Speed Rivals, which looks to merge single player with multi player seamlessly, a variant on the Most Wanted theme.

Sports the usual NFL, NBA Live, FIFA, NHL and new comer UFC which was introduced by Bruce Buffer in his classic style, with Dana White, Benson Henderson, Jon Jones and the EA Sports guy. All games built on the Ignite engine. Personally I, as a UFC/MMA fan, am curious about how the UFC game turns out, not sold yet.

Mirror's Edge 2 was announced, this time free roaming. Cool.

Overall a good presentation but badly paced. a C+.

Ubisoft

Aisha Tyler is the host again, yes! I like her!

Jerry Cantrell from Alice In Cahins comes out, he's demo'ing Rocksmith. Cool enough.
Splinter Cell Blacklist with a confusing trailer, out this august.
Rayman Legends re-announced from last year this time not a Wii U title only.

We got to see Assassin's Creed IV Blag Flag, Watch Dogs, Just Dance 2014 South Park the Stick of Truth and The mighty Quest For Epic Loot, the latter a F2P Hack and Slash, Trials Fusion and Frontier, one for iOS and one for consoles. And Rabbids interactive TV thing in cooperation with Nikelodeon.

New cool IPs are The Crew a car based mission based multi/single player game, looked like a cool game. As someone who has a background in the car mechanic/shop business the car assembly bit was very nice.
The Division looks so cool, that one I really want to get my hands on.

Overall a solid B

Part 2 comes later. come back for more.

E3 2013

I will be blogging it

This year I am going to do my version of coverage of it.
Mostly for fun but also to share my feelings and thoughts on the matter.

I will watch what there are of conferences and other coverage and do my take on it..

What will excite me?
What will puzzle me?
What will annoy me?
What will piss me off?

What will make my geek gasms go off like wild fire?

E3 2013 will tell me :)

Hope you'll join me in the week of June 11th to 13th.

PlayStation 4

PS Meeting 2013, My Thoughts

So at midnight on Wednesday (or technically Thursday) Sony held their PS Meeting 2013 where they announced PlayStation 4. I watched on GT since I like that they gives us the Spike pre and post shows streamed too.

I was a bit unsure if it would be called PS4 mainly because the number 4 is considered unlucky in parts of Asia (including Japan) much like 13 here. But it was.

They basically apologized to the developers for the difficult Cell environment and stated they PS4 is gamer and developer focused. They called their architecture a supercharged PC environment, built around the X86 processing (same as PC gaming) and 8GB of unified memory (a massive jump from PS3's 512MB). Also large storage.
In terms of network and download they have a dedicated chip for downloading, allowing you to background downloads, downloads while powered down and downloads of games and allowing you to start playing before the entire game is downloaded.
Also you'll be allowed to now do live streams of your gaming via their partneship with Ustream. (also Facebook integration) Also Gaikai will as time goes give you stream and play over the internet (much like OnLive has) They showed their new controller with the share buttons, headset jack and a slight modified form factor plus a touchpad. No show of actual console but I did not expect that.
Also harder PS Vita integration with ability to cross play with the PS4 games and stop and start gaming kinda like you do on Netflix with shows and movies.

I remain very positive to what I've heard, but will not jump on the hype train until Microsoft has said what their next box will be like. And until E3 has been.
But maybe I now get some use out of my Ustream account ;-)

I want to know more but I am getting the nerd tingles.

Games.

They showed real gameplay of Killzone: Shadow Fall (Guerilla Games)
While still having that floaty future shooter thing going and not the greatest jump in graphical fidelity it had a much larger scope than previous games, feeling much more open and great draw distance. AND bunch of colours. Not just brown, gray and red.

They announced InFamous Second Son (Sucker Punch), Deep Down {working title] (Capcom) and Blizzard is bringing Diablo 3 to PS3 and PS4. The Halo guys at Bungie showed up to show that tells us nothing trailer for Destiny and announced exclusive content for PS4 (now that could something as lame as a gun or a skin only) And Ubisoft came and showed off some more of Watch Dogs. And Media Molecule came and had a little cute Move demo thing with sculpting and pupped show and you know, them being them,

Square Enix in my opinion was the fail of the night, not only showing us something we saw like a year ago and telling us to look forward to E3 to hear something from them.

Presentation generally good with some issues. Best guy was Mike Cerny, that guy I really like.
Sucker Punch got too dark. Why did Destiny need four guys for that?

And Sony.. Next time demand NEW stuff from Square Enix or leave them out.

Final PlayStation 4 judgement comes after E3.

E3 2012

11 days ago E3 2012 kicked off.
Gametrailers in league with Spike TV started it off before the press conferences started with various musings and trailers and then kept going for I think 6 hours day one and 5 hours day two of constant live streaming. I was working so I only could catch day one as a full on live from GT.

Gametrailers has since last year been my go-to site for my E3 coverage, with sprinklings from YouTube and Gamer.no added on. This year I was well pleased with GT and the level of quality of the coverage. (Though picture quality on the stream was SD). And the biggest bonus? 4 Invisible Walls in a row! Tuesday to friday.

So GT get a A- (would get a A with a better picture quality on stream)

On to the pressers.

Microsoft

Had Halo 4, Call of Duty Black Ops2 and the new South Park game that was their saviors.
The rest was so useless. Especially for us over here in Europe. I still haven't seen ANYTHING of the movie/TV stuff come here. (Netflix, ESPN and UFC on Xbox to name some) And NO! Zune HD does not count anymore as it is today more expensive than going out and buying a Blu Ray/DVD.
Smart Glass, sure you can use their browser and stuff with everything with this but the other things, game stuff.. I don't want my developers using more precious developer time to tack on yet another gimmick.
Kinect.. Yeah cool for those that like it but I am not one of them (only game I see myself ever playing is Dance Central). Just a bunch of mini games and Wii Fit like stuff..

Without the three games mentioned at the top this would be shit. I know I said on Twitter B- I have since revised that to a C-

EA

Had a bunch of shooters, Battlefield 3 Premium subscription service, Crysis 3, Medal of Honor: Warfighter and to an extent Dead Space 3 (more shootery what they showed), then their annual Need For Speed game (feels annual).
Cool enough. I am kinda interested in MoH mostly because MoH is said to have Norwegian special forces in it. Racing games I'm still burned out on.

Sports. They presented NFL and FIFA 13 and instead of showing the actual games off, some dude came on a talked FIFA stat crap and they brought out Michael Irving who talked some NFL stuff.. Instead of showing off their new ball game tech. UFC has been sold by THQ to EA and in the process Yukes who made the 3 first ones are now fired. I mean yeay for UFC games still being made but damn, I HOPE EA hires the original dev team to do the next one because I want them to expand upon UFC Undisputed 3. And with EA's online practices.. Yeah.. I am not fully positive to this.

And then SimCity both full game and Facebook game cool for the "sim'ers out there.

I give them a C overall.

Ubisoft

Started out with some retro dressed chicks dancing for some Just Dance game with Flo Rider and I was like "urrggghh not more of this shit.." Then BOOM naked titties in my face! Far Cry 3 throws that in my face before the other action starts and the game is making you trip balls. Cool I'm into it, time will tell if I want to get it. Rayman Legends. Now that Wii U demo made a huge smile creep up on my face :) THAT'S how you show off new tech. (Nintendo take notes). Assassin's Creed 3 looks so great and Watch Dogs looks very intriguing. The Shootmania Esport stuff was tad meh but at least they got to show it off in a good way.

All in all this was A grade stuff and got my nerd boner going for the first time.

Sony

Shows off Beyond Two Souls, Looks good but hope it's not a Quick Time Event type game. I'm want a demo before buying just to find out. Assassin's Creed 3 naval warfare shown of and I liked it.
Last of Us is one of those games I really want. God of War Ascension cool I'll get it eventually. PlayStation All-Stars:Battle Royale. Cool but very Super Smash Bro Brawl. Minus The fling your defeated opponend off screen. Oh and Assassin's Creed Liberty on Vita looks really cool. Might break down and get a Vita if that bundle gets here. BTW Sony where is my video rental service on my PS3? Still not here.
That Wonderbook stuff.. That should just be a 60 second trailer instead of that shit you had on stage.

B+ Missed Last Guardian a ton.. Don't do the fucking Final Fantasy 13 crap and give us a 5 year promo circle before giving us that game.

Nintendo

Started off good with Pikmin 3 (though I have never played any Pikmin game so I don't know if it's a good game) but it disintegrated into a stale box of cookies by the end. (and to think they had 2 more parts online to this). No proper showing off of the Wii U, no hint as to what's in the console (and for crying out lout CNN had an article up that they thought the Gamepad was a new one for the old Wii) nor a hint of price.
Sure they will get tv stuff that as per usual NEVER get here.
Nintendo.. you failed miserably this year.

F for failing at what E3 is for..

The Games

The following games gained my attention this year:
  • Metro: Last Night
  • Dishonored
  • Assassin's Creed III
  • Assassin's Creed: Liberty
  • The Unfinished Swan
  • Last of Us
  • Far Cry 3
  • Borderlands 2
  • Rayman Legends
  • South Park: The Stick of Truth
  • Watch Dogs
  • Star Wars 1313
  • Hawken
The order of these games does not reflect my overall nerd boner for them and which gave me the harder one. Rather these are games I'm hungry to play.
I got the brain tingles when I saw these and the brain tingles are good :)

IIIUUUHH! Hardcopy! or??

In todays world there are plenty of ways to get games (and other media) from the developer to you. You can go to a shop and pick it up, or go order a copy off the Internet or even get it digitally via the wonder of the online space. Right.. So. What is the future of game distribution and how will it affect and effect our way of getting them, keeping them and playing them?

The old way.

You go and buy a game with box and a manual and everything else that might ship with it. You know like special editions or pre-order bonuses or whatever. The game is now yours. You can keep it forever and play it forever provided your console/PC (as with OS'es progressing and making old games hard to either run or install and those kind of problems) don't die on you or you fuck up the disc or whatever media they use in the future. So far so good right?

The new way (sort of).

You get your game through a download service such as PSN, XBL, Steam, GOG and whomever else does digital distribution. You put in your details and that and hey presto a little while after you're playing you newly acquired game without even so much as farting in physical effort. In other words, It's brilliant!

So far so good. Choices! Options!

Now I'm going to argue the pros and the cons of both these forms of getting your gaming needs met and a pondering of the future of such distribution.

Buying on physical media:

Aright, you go buy your game at a proper shop, you know one within a building and with clerks and everything. You pay your money (usually 40-60$/399-599NOK/30-50€) and in return you get the game you want. In a nice little box with the extra stuff the publisher put in with it. Great! It's yours forever and you can play this thing til you die an old man or woman if you so desire. And you can show it off, take it with you to friends places and give them away or trade them(though that's a total rip-off if you ask me) in for other games.

So far all is good. But wait! this also means that there is extra cost involved in getting this game to you. Cost that could go to making gaming better and might lead to more game developing companies surviving. And also costs that keeps games expensive to you the consumer.

Buying digitally:

Now you go into the online space to get your game. You put in you personal details and payment option and make an account and all that jazz to prepare for shopping. You find your game, pay, download and Todd's your uncle. You didn't spend money on transport to get you to a from the shop, all you did was sit comfortably at home (some other location) and got the game delivered to you directly and stored on your media of choice (memory stick, harddrive, solid state drive, phone etc.) and you're playing and having fun. And you probably saved money too. (10-15$/50-100NOK/8-13€).

Good stuff right. Publisher don't have to pay for replication, disc and manual (and extras) manufacturing and and the money can instead go to the licence fees and such and then more money goes back to the developers and you know everyone wins right? Well not so fast!  What about owning your game you payed for. So far digital distribution isn't full ownership. Why you ask? Well here are a few reasons why. First of all you can't take this copy over to a friends house and do what you like with it, no more trade-in and having a collection to show off. Secondly you are at the mercy of these distribution companies to have access to it in case of corruption of you games, your PC needs reintalling or you change PC and such, you know bad luck. And what about the future, you might want to go back and revisit your old games but holy crap! The service went down and you can no longer access it. In essence until these distribution companies can guarantee you lifetime access to your games you bought, you're just leasing them for a unknown time-frame, might be 2 years it might be 10 or such.

The way I see it, if full digital distribution is the future, then new standards in storing and accessing your purchases must be established.

1) Price of games must drop along with other DLC (read:addons) 2) Storage must be a lot cheaper 3) Distributors service/servers maintained forever. to ensure you access to your purchases for a lifetime. (you bought it you own it so only fair) 4) In case of distributor going bankrupt or discontinuing their services the prior customer base must be sold off (with proper protection of personal information and that end of the business) to a new one to maintain proper ownership. 5) a swap-games option must be enabled to be able to gift someone a game or simply swap games to have more games played (and this would also eliminate piracy a lot as people could just swap games between them on the fly). 6) country borders and treating different regions differently must die a horrible death.

These are my thoughts on the matter.

Curious to hear your thoughts.

Keeping Tabs

Why haven't I posted anything for a while?

Well, I've started to work again, Parttime at the airport, and have been working quite abit lately. Only had time to get up in the mornings and watch the Countdown with Keith Olbermann podcasts before heading to work and in the evenings watch The Rachel Maddow Show podcasts and check the sites I frequent. During the days I've been having off I've caught up on my TV shows and house chores and shopped for food. But it's great to be working again after being on the dole for about 8 months.

Games I've played since the last blog. Well I haven't really had the energy to play much but I've played Doom on the 360, Pinball FX, Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix, the Portal Still Alive demo, The Sonic Unleashed demo and messed about with PlayStation Home. Home I kinda found "meh" so far, I don't see myself using that alot.

And reading... Well if reading blogs and news sites and such count.. I've read some. Same reason as all the other things.

But tonight I plan on playing something and maybe even read.

Movies. Games and other stuff

Hi there.

So this week I've seen two movies, not great movies but good movies. I watched Prison Block a.k.a.Animal and Cloverfield . I liked both movies but I cannot recommend buying them at full retail price, Bargain bin sure or rental.  I wont say anything about what's in the movies as you can go rent them and see for yourself.

And I've played some Penny Arcade Episode 1 and some Pinball FX this week and tried some random demos off XBLA. Fun and entertaining and the PA game game me some good laughs.

In the reading department I'm going through the The Amazing Spider-Man Essential vol. 7. And random news and blogs online.

Some Thoughts

Civil War

I've started to read the Civil War comics from Marvel after I'd heard about it on Annoyed Gamer

I started with "The Road To Civil War" and will shortly read the "Civil War" comic. My version is the issue 1-7 collected into one paperback. It's totally awesome! Thank you Marcus for pointing me in that dircetion. :-)  ...I love comics.. I really do.

My Gaming Life

So this week I've been playing my 360 alot, been kinda hooked on Puzzle Quest. I've got 8 out of 12 achivements on that and I've gained a few other ones. Played a little Gears Of War, the Penny Arcade Epi. 1 and some other stuff too. I did play my Wii a little with Zack&Wiki and some Wii Sports (which I haven't touched for months) and a little PS3 in the form of Star Wars The Force Unleashed and Guitar Hero 3. Not been like super hardcore but I've played more this week that before. But  I love to play. Going to play alot in the coming days/weeks/months.

The Other Stuff

Other than that I've been working out twice in 4 days, doing 2 sessions (1H/45min) of strength and cardio. To get fitter, tone up and loose some weight/inches. I work with manuals (that I can adjust the weight on) and doing other stuff.  Who knows, maybe I'll do a hints&tips video at a later time. (no garantee!)

And I've been following my fave podcasts, tv shows and such too. Listened to net radio, Some from Shout-cast.com and Bandit.se. And bought new shoes (about bloody time as I haven't bought new shoes since 05).

So that's a little update from me.

New Record Year In Norway?

A translation

From Gamer.no.

Gamer.no's article

If we are to believe the salesfigures for the first half of the year, we are heading towards another record year for the norwegian games market.

Norsk Spill- og Mulitmediaforening (Norwegian Games&Multimedia assosiation) has delivered the turnover numbers from the games industry for the first half of 2008, and can brag about that as a whole the industry has had a increase of 16,6% compared to the same time period of last year.

Which makes the norwegian game market head to another record year. The industry has sold for 231 million NOK (about 41 million USD) during the first half of the year.

As per usual NSM has also published statistics over the various formats on the market, and the number show that the PlayStation 3 has taken the torch from the Playstation 2, which is the console that has sold the most games in this country.

Totally the PlayStation 3 has taken a 31% marketshare, while the X-Box 360 has 17,7% and the Wii has 14,2%. It is worth noticing that MicroSoft don't release their salesnumbers so the 360's real share is probably somewhat higher.

PC sales has had a marked downfall since last year, something that might be due to a lack of big titles (World of Warcraft Burning Crusade demolished all other competitors last year)

PC made up 15,2% of the norwegian market in sales. NSM only register sales over the counter and not the ever increasing digital download sales (Steam, Direct2Drive etc.)

Of the handheld systems the DS is leading the pack with a 9,5% of the total market. PSP is struggling hard with only 1,5%, while the old PS2 is still doing good with 11,2%.

Notes:

The Pie chart in article is showing marketshare.

This is a direct translation of the article which I did to share these numbers as they might be of interest. Especially in looking at the differences between nations and regions.

I take only credit for translation all other credits go to Joachim Froholt the writer of the original article.
