Norway and Pro boxing

And by extention MMA/MA at a pro level

A little history; Norway banned pro boxing in 1981 after politicians figured it would cause harm to the audience and that they were against people making money on people damaging each other. The other argument they used and still use is all the deaths and head trauma cases.

And now there's some movements to lift the 1981 ban. While no one thinks it's going happen tomorrow the idea is now percolating. The money making and the audience harm has been dropped as a focus but the head trauma/death part is still in focus.

We as a nation do have pro boxers that did well and new ones that do well today. The sad part is they can as it stand never perform their sport on Norwegian soil. Names like Steffen Tangstad, Ole "Lukkøye" (shut eye) Klementsen, Arild Haugen, Camilla Brækhus to name a few.

Now for injuries in the sport.

And in here there will be some of my own personal opinions and thoughts, coupled with pure common sense.

Yes every time you decide to enter a fight there is risk of injury. A fight is by definition a possible way to incur injury of any sort and yes of death if handled by the wrong people with the wrong set of knowledge.

But I firmly believe that a lot of the really serious injuries and deaths has been caused by in large by the fight event holders and their doctors. I believe that most of them were caused by incompetence within those events.

The one thing within pro boxing I do however react to is the 8 count, especially when used more than twice. If a fighter has been dazed to the point of need that 8 count more than 2 times that fighter is in my opinion close to suffer a concussion, internal bleeds (both in the body and brain) and brain damage.

But injury and/or death occur in sports fully legal in Norway, like;

Football (that's soccer for you Americans)

Skating

Racing(There have been deaths and bad injuries)

Snowboarding

Sky diving

Just to name some.

Any sport can injure you to varying degree.

Injury is NOT a valid argument for banning a sport or a from of a sport.

The thing needed is to lift the ban on pro boxing and demand the event holders know what they're doing and do away with multiple 8 counts. And keep with the worldwide suspension when a fighter has been knocked out. To keep them from fighting too soon.

AND while we're at it make ALL martial arts legal at a pro level.

This is also a plea to get such things as the UFC to Norway.

And there they put fighters safety first!

Both seasons on Blu ray and all 10 of the Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris.

The Sookie Stackhouse novels are the basis of the awesome HBO series by Alan Ball. I find them both to be equally addictive. Ans I hope season 3 will find it's way on B regioned Blu Rays soon. (why is anything in this globalized world still region based/locked?).

Stargate Universe Finale and Tattoo

On the 11th of June I got up and relaxed and ate and got ready to go out to get my tattoo.

It wasn't really painfull apart from two little spots and I'm rather pleased with the result. This image was taken when it was fresh and I will post a new one once it's all healed up.

It is the stargate address to Earth, I got it as a tribute for the show I've loved for years, a sort of memorial for Don S. Davis.

The big univers coming together was strange, I get an appointment on the day of the Stargate Universe season finale, to get my gate address tattoo, which also includes my zodiac and my tattoo artist was Neil (close to O'Neill).

The tattoo was done at Arctic Tattoo.

Stargate Universe totally pwns. I cannot wait til season 2!

Ashy Update

Time for a small update here. Damn sometimes I'm really crap at posting. Sorry..

Right since my last blog I've completed the Obama autobiography and have started to read Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen series, on the first volume Gardens of the Moon. So far a good read. Other than that I'm keeping up on my shows, and gaming news and other stuff.

Tweeting a lot and hang out and post on "my" forums and working.

Right now work is a bit odd with the volcano eruption on Iceland which is wreaking havoc on the airspace and air traffic across the entire Europe really. Airspace closed and no traffic equals no passengers to serve and such can leave me and coworkers on on-leave notice in periods a head.

If you haven't watched Stargate Universe or SGU yet (Hello? Why haven't you?!) this trailer will spoil plot points from the first half of the season.

Here we go:

I watched this and I had goosebumps and my mind was going "SQUEE!" I cannot wait! This show is a worthy successor. I still want the third SG-1 movie and SGA movie to happen though. MGM I'm looking at you!

First half was great but now it seems it's kicking into high gear and bringing the spirit of it's two predecessors Stargate Atlantis (SGA) and Stargate SG-1 (SG-1) into the coctail as it were.

Sanctuary For Kids (S4K)

Help Haiti!

Sanctuary For Kids or S4K as it is also known as is a not for profit charity founded by Sanctuary and Stargate alumni Amanda Tapping and Damian Kindler and Jill Bodie. They aim to help children that are in poor areas and can't get food, medical care and/or education. They have forked in the money for the administrative cost so all of the donations go right to where they are needed You can leave a comment when donating where and/or how you'd prefer your donation to aid.

Right now all donations goes to help in Haiti after that horrendous earthquake that hit mainly their capital Port-au-Prince and other surrounding cities and areas this 12th of January. They will pass the money over to Save The Children. The unique thing about donating to S4K is that up until February the 12th all donations made to S4K, is that whatever you donate the Canadian government will match. So if you donate say 10$ CAD, Canada will donate 10$ CAD. Making your donation = 20$ CAD essentially.

Conan The Barbarian Movie

There is a new Conan The Barbarian movie in the works. From what I understand it's a remake but that's fine with me. I used to read Conan a lot as a kid and even made a sort of school report on the subject.

In this light Jason Momoa, better known as Ronon Dex in Stargate Atlantis, has been cast as Conan. Good choice. He's tall and has the right physique and demeanor for the part (sure he should bulk up a little to match what I expect from him reading the comics). But I'm pleased he beat out Twiglet (read:Twillight) actor Kellen Lutz for it.

God of War III

This weekend the good folks at Sony Computer Entertainment saw it fit to give me early access to the game. They did a selected "valued PlayStation®Network user" access code giveaway and I guess they value me :-)

It is the E3 2009 demo and within the demo file they've included the E3 trailer from the same event. And what do I think?

First off the demo is pretty kick-arse and does showcase alot of the gameplay mechanics and does it well. It looks great and feels organic to play once you've screwed your head around the controls and the flow of it's use. Made me want the game and the PSP game and made me look forward to the re-issue of GoW and GoW II in upscaled Blu-Ray glory.

Visceral and primal, yet sophisticated and absolutely NOT for kids! I am pretty hardened when it comes to violence in my media but this has some moments even I felt a bit "urk.. feel a little sick". I do love it when things can shake me up and stir something deep in me. :)

I do see that this is a 6+month old build and that it's essentially a beta code but with this as the basis for the late March 2010 release, this game is going to be awesome! No questions asked. If this is a real taste for the game I am so there come March 24th next year, first in line.

I do however question the reasoning behind this type of demo release. I guess they like to do something special at times and make some feel special in the process. But having said that, they ought to have a new demo out some time prior to the game being released for all PSN users.

In todays world there are plenty of ways to get games (and other media) from the developer to you. You can go to a shop and pick it up, or go order a copy off the Internet or even get it digitally via the wonder of the online space. Right.. So. What is the future of game distribution and how will it affect and effect our way of getting them, keeping them and playing them?

The old way.

You go and buy a game with box and a manual and everything else that might ship with it. You know like special editions or pre-order bonuses or whatever. The game is now yours. You can keep it forever and play it forever provided your console/PC (as with OS'es progressing and making old games hard to either run or install and those kind of problems) don't die on you or you fuck up the disc or whatever media they use in the future. So far so good right?

The new way (sort of).

You get your game through a download service such as PSN, XBL, Steam, GOG and whomever else does digital distribution. You put in your details and that and hey presto a little while after you're playing you newly acquired game without even so much as farting in physical effort. In other words, It's brilliant!

So far so good. Choices! Options!

Now I'm going to argue the pros and the cons of both these forms of getting your gaming needs met and a pondering of the future of such distribution.

Buying on physical media:

Aright, you go buy your game at a proper shop, you know one within a building and with clerks and everything. You pay your money (usually 40-60$/399-599NOK/30-50€) and in return you get the game you want. In a nice little box with the extra stuff the publisher put in with it. Great! It's yours forever and you can play this thing til you die an old man or woman if you so desire. And you can show it off, take it with you to friends places and give them away or trade them(though that's a total rip-off if you ask me) in for other games.

So far all is good. But wait! this also means that there is extra cost involved in getting this game to you. Cost that could go to making gaming better and might lead to more game developing companies surviving. And also costs that keeps games expensive to you the consumer.

Buying digitally:

Now you go into the online space to get your game. You put in you personal details and payment option and make an account and all that jazz to prepare for shopping. You find your game, pay, download and Todd's your uncle. You didn't spend money on transport to get you to a from the shop, all you did was sit comfortably at home (some other location) and got the game delivered to you directly and stored on your media of choice (memory stick, harddrive, solid state drive, phone etc.) and you're playing and having fun. And you probably saved money too. (10-15$/50-100NOK/8-13€).

Good stuff right. Publisher don't have to pay for replication, disc and manual (and extras) manufacturing and and the money can instead go to the licence fees and such and then more money goes back to the developers and you know everyone wins right? Well not so fast! What about owning your game you payed for. So far digital distribution isn't full ownership. Why you ask? Well here are a few reasons why. First of all you can't take this copy over to a friends house and do what you like with it, no more trade-in and having a collection to show off. Secondly you are at the mercy of these distribution companies to have access to it in case of corruption of you games, your PC needs reintalling or you change PC and such, you know bad luck. And what about the future, you might want to go back and revisit your old games but holy crap! The service went down and you can no longer access it. In essence until these distribution companies can guarantee you lifetime access to your games you bought, you're just leasing them for a unknown time-frame, might be 2 years it might be 10 or such.

The way I see it, if full digital distribution is the future, then new standards in storing and accessing your purchases must be established.

1) Price of games must drop along with other DLC (read:addons) 2) Storage must be a lot cheaper 3) Distributors service/servers maintained forever. to ensure you access to your purchases for a lifetime. (you bought it you own it so only fair) 4) In case of distributor going bankrupt or discontinuing their services the prior customer base must be sold off (with proper protection of personal information and that end of the business) to a new one to maintain proper ownership. 5) a swap-games option must be enabled to be able to gift someone a game or simply swap games to have more games played (and this would also eliminate piracy a lot as people could just swap games between them on the fly). 6) country borders and treating different regions differently must die a horrible death.

These are my thoughts on the matter.

Digital Life

Since the start of Sanctuary season 2 I've started to be involved with the Sanctuary For All (SFA for short) community. There I have found a great group of friends, yes i call them friends already, that has been nothing but nice and welcoming. There I've found someone to discuss my favourite show and my other interests and basically found like-minded people. Thanks to my fellow Sancturians, You're awesome!

I've also become more active on Twitter (See top of blog to find me) and have had good short-burst conversations, and at the same time found out I'm a bit Stargate-autistic. Lots of my fellow Sancturians is there and it's a great way to keep up with the more behind the scenes of my two fave sci-fi shows; Sanctuary and Stargate Universe.

And I've gone and bought Brütal Legend, and that game is so Metal and awesome! If you are 1) a fan of metal and hard rock, 2) like Jack Black, 3) like Tim Schaefer (any of those three) you need to buy this game! Period!

Waiting on my Sanctuary season 1 DVD, should be here next week. :)

Other than that I'm working and eating and sleeping and keeping up with my online stuff and shows.

My New Number 1 Show

Season two started Friday (or yesterday for me) and the show is back in a tour de force manner. The story kicks off right where it left off in season 1 and the performance of the cast was thrilling, heartbreaking, astonishing and compelling in a great way. Special honours goes to Amanda Tapping and Emilie Ullerup for their heart tugging portrayal. And for great snark and flare Jonathon Young. And the interaction between Amanda and Christopher Heyerdahl is so sweet in a creepy scary kind of way (but still a good way). Yes I on purpose use the actors name to give them the proper respect and praise for their excellent work. Plus I will not spoil anything for you, as I hate spoilers myself.

The show is turning into a formidable force to be reckoned with and I am so impressed with it due to the way it started, as a passion project on the internet in the form of a web-series. Damien Kindler, Martin Wood and Amanda Tapping has done a phenomenal job bringing this to life and what a blessing it is that it got picked up and made into a proper high quality TV show.

I have nothing but praise for this show and I urge you to all get the season 1 DVD boxset where you'll get the webisodes and other extras. I'm getting it soon.

I've gotten on the track of learning japanese now, using my Let's Learn Hiragana book. So far I've learn to read and identify 4 out of 46 of the basic Hiragana and also sort of write them. A good start I find. :-) I feel this is now a real achievable goal me learning this rather beautiful language. If I keep up my studies this project of mine will be a success. I'll be keeping you posted on my progress. :-)

Apart from that I'm working a lot and is feeling rather good about my life in general. Sure I do have some low/dark moments but I overcome them by various means. Been reading a bit, gotten through volume 1 of the Berserk and Samurai Deeper Kyo manga. And is about to start book 2 of Timothy Zahn*s Thrawn Trilogy. Waiting on october 15th, then Brütal Legend a game I'm so stoked for comes out, 6ft cheeseburger erection type stoked (if you get that one you are a geek), AND I really hope they release the full soundtrack for it!

The Beautiful People

I've been lately thinking about people I find attractive, beautiful, gorgeous and sexy, as such I'm forging ahead now. Now this will not be a "Top 10" type list but just a look into what I find to be the above mentioned. The order is random and just will contain what makes them attractive.

Stephen Fry:

He opens his mouth and what comes out sounds like poetry, such an exquisite use of the English language. Even when being crude and cheeky it sounds marvelous. And he writes just as well as he sounds. I love a man that can express himself well. The way he chooses to to dress himself is so cool. It's so exciting to see what tie/accessories, shirt, suit combo he does, or for that matter when being casual, even then he is classy. He is such a gorgeous man, inside and outside. A beautiful face with sweet eyes, tall and handsome. I love it when he sports the longish messy hair, like on QI season 5/6. Makes me wish I was a man.

Keith Olbermann:

A silver fox. That silver mane graduating into black with that radiant face, cheeky smile and those blue eyes. a great sense of style, also a man with great suits, shirts and ties and that is something I like a lot. His voice is of that great baritone quality and he uses it to great effect in his delivery of his Special Comments and when I'm watching Countdown I get a thrill in his usage of the English language, rare for americans to use it that way. And at some point during the show I just get lost in how good looking he is. He is a caring and loving man with his emotions rather on his sleeve, which is another reason I find him beautiful. And check back on my November 11th '08 post to see what made me a true fan of him.

Amanda Tapping:

Now this is a woman I've been in love with for a good while. She is such a beautiful and gorgeous woman. She has these big blue awesome eyes and a super sweet face and fantastic hair. And her personality is a sweet, caring, cheeky and strong force. She is one talented woman, She writes, produces, directs and acts and has her own show now(with some of her StarGate collegues) and she is funny as hell! If you look up her convention appearances or even the commentary she's done on the SG-1 DVDs you'll know why. Once again I wish I was a man.

Eddie Izzard:

A man that can pull of wearing a dress and high heels better than some women can. And he got nice legs. He is such a funny, goofy, random guy and has that je ne sais quoi sexy thing going on. He has this amazing ability to go from handsome rugged man to this feminine gorgeous version of himself. and he's a self-proclaimed action transvestite. And I like his acting and his stand-up is great. What can I say he appeals to both side of my sexuality.

Hugh Laurie:

I've always thought he was good looking but he is the sort of man that gets better with age. That tall slender frame with that nice rugged look he sports now since becoming Dr. House and those fantastic blue eyes, makes a girl pay attention. And he like Fry have my kind of outlook on things and I find being funny a sexy attribute. He's talented, and a great musician and has this very English humbleness to him, which is quite a good quality.

David Hewlett:

He's just cute as a puppy, I mean, such a sweet, funny man. He's a handsome guy that don't get the attention he deserves. Always eager to interact with fans and don't take himself serious at all. And a great comedic talent, with an amazing ability to really bring forth some hardcore emotions and portrayal of character (just see how far he went with Dr. McKay) and a good actor/writer/director. See his A Dogs Breakfast to know why, and has some added value for Stargate fans.

Claudia Black:

Dark haired spunky yet goofy woman, with a big radiant smile and pretty eyes. First caught my eyes in Farscape as an aggressive, yet troubled Peacekeeper warrior. And if you've seen Farscape you'll know why I'm so keen on her. She has since become more beautiful and has a great sense of humour and good at sillyness. Good with fans and doesn't take herself seriously.

These are some of the poeple I find attractive and makes my heart skip a beat or beat harder. I just felt putting it out there.

The Journey Has Begun

Today my book order arrived from the UK.

Let's Learn Hiragana and Let's Learn katakana. So now my venture into learning japanese is at hand. I've begun to dabble with it already and has learned my first hiragana. And having a quick look at the hiragana alphabet as it were I might have worked out how I should write my own name. Though progressing through this I might be proven right or I'll find out I'm wrong. Time will tell.

So I'll be tri-lingual by the time this is completed. (or quad-lingual if you count swedish).

Decisions And Other News.

Been a while since my last entry. Been working, and the usual life stuff.

I've made a decision last weekend. I am going to learn japanese! I'm just waiting on my paycheck so i can go ahead and buy the first two books on the japanese written language, Hiragana and Katakana. Later I'll study Kanji the third written type. I've gotten advice that starting to learn the written part first is a good place to start, and it does makes sense as if you can't read a language like japanese you will struggle in actually learning it properly. But I'll study it about an hour every day I think. (depending on energy level of course) and then get a hold of more study material as I progress.

I do have a goal of going to Japan (Tokyo) before I'm 40 (preferably 35) but that's not the main reason I want to learn the language. I have a love for anime and manga and as such I would like to not be depending on a)localized anime (you know with subtitles)/manga or b) fan translations. And if I know japanese I can just order straight form there anything I'd like to read/watch(or games I'd like to play but hate the english dub).

Hm.. Going to need a japanese keyboard soon don't I (that and the "font pack")?

Plus japanese is to me a beautyful and awesome language!

I've discovered a nice "new" anime via a music video on YouTube. Busou Renkin. I've seen a few episodes and I really like it and while it's a bit creepy in some areas it's a good anime.

And this week I've seen Gedo Senki and Neko No Ongaeshi both movies from Studio Ghibli and both wonderful stories.

I have started on Book 1 of Berserk. So far a rather brutal manga. still trying to get the story but I've just read two chapters so far.

Yeah I'm rather immersed in this kind of thing right now. But it's all good! :-)

Other than this I'm playing a little and hanging out online.

What's up? A little update on my life.

Right.. I've not been real active with the blog lately but I've been up to a few things.

Mainly I've been busy working. I've gotten promoted since my last life update, I've gone up to shift manager in rank and is now attending the business meetings and what come with the territory of being in the leader group at work. I've learned alot since I started but i still have tons to learn left. I have to say i do love the work as it presents a challenge and gives me a proper insight into what actually goes into running a shop. And the people at work fits well with who I am and we have some good laughs.

Games, yeah I have played some UFC 2009 Undisputed, Uncharted, Final Fantasy VII, and some other little stuff. Found a great way to keep a sort of diary about my gaming. GamerDNA. Where you add your game collection then either through direct updates via XBL or manually PSN or Steam and Xfire keep track of you play habits and how much you play. And you can find likeminded people there. Contemplating getting the Tales of Monkey Island SE off XBLA or should I buy it on Steam? (though Steam in Europe has had a rather big jump in price since they did the typical idiot move of thinking 1$=1€ which is false. 1€=1,42$ . )

And I've read abit lately. Crooked Little Vein by Warren Ellis A really good book but for the 18+ crowd. NOT for teens/children. and slowly making my way through Obama's bio.

Other than that been helping my brother move.. Again. think this is the third time in a year. And doing my internet stuff and trying to keep a tidy flat. a little later today I'll be playing and reading some more.

E3: My impressions

Alright. This past week there was E3. Or Electronic Entertainment Expo if you will.

I've now caught up on the big 3's (that's Sony, MicroSoft and Nintendo) press conferences and various developer interviews and showcases and such. And I've formed some thoughts on the matter.

Let's do this in one by one.

Microsoft:

Kicked off with Rock Band The Beatles. Now I like the beatles but I personally dont' care about Rock Band or Guitar Hero anymore. Sure it's fun for a bit but I'm not into it anymore.

Then they had a string of XBLA stuff like Epic Games' new title and some other stuff like Facebook and Twitter being on the 360. And from the flags shown in the expantion of TV streaming bit it seems we're getting it here in Norway too.

Natal looks great but the Milo bit was fake as hell. Though you'd need a frikking huge livingroom to play using that thing ^_^

Modern Warfare 2 looks totally awesome (getting it on PC though) and Forza 3 did impress me.

Metal Gear Solid: Rising looks cool but is multiplatform so not a big deal per say but I love the concept nontheless.

Halo ODST and Halo Reach looks good too (but I've not really play Halo at all apart from a bit on a XBL DL of the original.)

And I loved the look of Alan Wake.

As a whole I was impressed by Microsoft and as a 360 owner I do see it having a future and has some great stuff coming (though some boring stuff to) Grade: A-

Nintendo:

The good stuff. Super Mario Galaxy 2, Metroid: Other M, New DS Zelda and the general Motion + stuff.

The bad: Boring and too slow. The New Super Mario Bros Wii just an up-resed version of the DS iteration. Plus that Vitality thing... Yet another thing that needs to be plugged somewhere and I don't see the point of it really.

All in all decent, better that last year(and no stupid story from Cammy about breaking something) so a grade C+.

Sony:

They showed God of War 3 which looks brutal and it seems it's evolved quite abit from the other two.

MAG, They actually had a live 256 player demo on stage on the HUGE screen on stage. I'm curious about how they plan to do the hosting of matches and skirmishes. and what resolution and framerate they're shooting for. My guess is 720p 30fps.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, I'm impressed by how far into the scenery you can see and the colours and everything. I should go and get Uncharted shouldn't I?

Metal Gear Solid: Peacewalker looks great and a sort of sequel to MGS3.

Gran Turisimo is just insane however you look at it and it is coming to PSP and PS3 and like 800 cars to collect! I am getting abit stoked I must admidt.

Rachet&Clank: A Crack in Time: Breif mention in the conf but I've seen gameplay and it looks great.

The wands. I like but will I need it? Got the PS Eye already so perhaps.

Final Fantasy VII announced for PSN and two days later out on PSN. And promptly bought.

Final Fantasy XIV MMO console exclusive. for me I don't give a squirt of piss about it.. Done with MMOs for the time being.

PSP Go. Cool but way too expensive!

Oh I'm forgetting stuff.

Sony was great and stole the show by sheer amount of content and the fact they had an answer to everything the other two came with. Grade A.

Apart for the big 3 there is an impressive amount of stuff coming. :-)

I am so stoked it got renewed for a second season as I have it in my top 10 tv-series of all times. The series was born on the internet in the form of a web show and got picked up by The Sci-Fi Channel and got reworked abit and now is in pre-production (they are shooting it as I write) for season 2. Rated E for everyone , production year 1988, cinematic release in Norway 30th march 2007. Watched in japanese with Norwegian subtitles.

So I watched this for the first time ever this wednesday evening. I'd had a crappy prank pulled on me at the end of my work shift and was rather miffed and not really in the best of moods. So I needed something to take my mind off things.

Oh my lord! Did it ever!

Okey short plot summary first.

It's about a four year old girl called Mei and her big sister Satsuki, they are moving to this old house in the forest with their father while their mother is in hospital for unknown reasons. And then little Mei meets the forest guarding/spirit Totoro and an adventure unfolds. I'm not going any further as I want everyone to watch this movie.

I was so taken with the art style and the artistic workmanship that had gone into the movie and the story is just great. A gem, a treasure really. I've watched quite a few movies out of Studio Ghibli and mr. Miyazaki has been involved in all of them in one way or the oher and that studio has become one of my favourite outlets for anime. Art and storytelling meeting in an animated medium. Quality.

I felt a level of happiness watching this that I rarely do. The movie simply was a joy to watch. I highly recommend it to anyone. I went to bed feeling all warm and fuzzy all over and inside. Yes this all sound really corny and silly don't it? Well I don't care! I was made truly happy by this movie and it's like a bunch of puppies and kittens kind of good. You know? Oh and I want a cat bus too!!

My highest recommendations.

Initial thoughts

Got this game yesterday, bought at GAME, took it home and plugged it into my DS.

Right, first one simple fact about the game. It has not been out in Europe before. Not on the PlayStation nor the Super Nintendo. So I have been wanting to play this since about '95. Well sure I could have modded my PlayStation to play a US release but I am abit of a purist when it comes to my consoles and like to keep them 100% original.

And so far... I'm NOT disappointed! This game is fantastic. I've played for about 6 hours so far and I'm already involved with the characters. I've renamed them all because I can and because I just want to personalize my play experience. The story has already gripped me and I'm involved in the game. Might this game be the game to make me cry? Long rambling shorten; I'm loving this game! I might come back with a full review once I've finished the game.

And the music is some of the best scoring I've heard in a game (or anything). I kept sitting/laying there humming along while playing. I rarely do that.

Today I had a really busy day at work. I've started abit on my new job at the airport in the kiosk department. I've had a sort of crash course in it. and I've also worked the busting tables and cleaning job as well. Multitasking like a fiend at work these days, being in every work place bar the grill basically. Making that cash. yeah.

Tonight I'm frustrated as I want to pay games but my bloody arms are too tired to play. I might just go and fetch my DS and play it. Hmm.. No I got it. I'll read. Surely that must work, hold book flip pages.. Yeah, that'll work.

Other than work I just try to keep up with everything else.

Keeping Tabs

It's been quiet on my front lately. haven't really been up to much besides sleeping, eating and working. Well that's only somewhat true. I've been reading abit, finished the first part of Barack Obama's book Dreams From My Father. So far it is a really good read. It's very honest and direct while showing a great use of contemporary english, I find it to be great writing. Once I've finished the book I'll come back with more thoughts on it.

And I've been keeping up with my fave shows; Countdown, Rachel Maddow etc. I was saddened today watching the final episode of Stargate Atlantis ever (well there is one movie coming) and it was a real good SGA episode. And I've watched Sanctuary, a great new show featuring Amanda Tapping of Stargate SG-1 fame. And bought myself new awesome nerd shirts, one Hulk and one Iron Man.

Today I've been contemplating importing some books. As the shops here is unable to get the books I tend to want to read, but I have a tendency to find kind of obscure titles that is written by people that noone here has ever heard about. I'm thinking ordering them straight from the USA (amazon.com FTW) but I need to find out what it'll cost me first.

And I've been in town and finally gotten myself a proper single malt to enjoy, going to pour myself one in a little while. I could finally afford to buy one.

The end to my evening/night? I went on YouTube and put on Caramelldansen (SSBB version) and wiggled my hips and bounced around to the beat. Jolly good fun every now and then and a frikking good "get the heartrate up" thing to do. What can I say sometimes you just need something totally silly.

Movie Review

I decided to celebrate the coming of the new year with watching Batman The Dark Knight on Blu-Ray (The two disc special edition) as I didn't feel like going out to watch the fireworks as it isn't all that great to look at from my place and the general quality of the fireworks are kinda lame here and you get fed up with them as they start testing it from like the 26th out(Plus I'd already been out this week). Enough about that.

This movie is a dream to watch, it has everything you would want in a movie. The cinematic landscape is fantastic, the way it had been filmed was just stunning. And it contributed greatly to the atmosphere and while I didn't watch it on a 7:1 sound system the sound of the movie was special. And the special effects was really well done.

The story fits well with who I think Batman is. Christian Bale does a great job portraying our dark caped crusader. The Dark Knight and Batman Begins is in my opinion the best of the live action Batman movies. And Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine brings something subtle yet good to the table. Heath Ledger (may he rest in peace) was fantastic as the lunatic Joker. I wonder who will fill the Joker suit in the next Batman (which I really think will come). I was immersed all the way through and found myself sliding closer and closer to the screen as the movie progressed. This movie is the best movie I've seen this year. Yes it beat Iron Man! One thing that struck me during watching this, Iron Man and Batman are the two superheroes that made themselves, they both rely on technology and their wit to beat the villains. Thank you DC and Marvel for taking your audience seriously and bringing us great movies of our superheroes. I assume both of you does monitor the produtions.

The extras on the Blu-Ray is great. The Batman tech special is a wonderful thing to watch. Especially for a nerd like me. Very pleased with this release.

Today I finished the shopping, wrapping and sending of the Jule (x-mas) presents and got a few treats for this time. The box of Ginger cookies, the rib-roll cuts and the bag of mixed nuts.

I personally don't celebrate the birth of Jesus as I'm not christian. I do however celebrate the old viking mid-winter feast. A gathering of the "clan"(family) for eating, giving gifts(or offerings). While my mother might be more on the Jesus thing I never truly subscribed to it.

But this year we're gathering at the house mom grew up in, my granma's house. It's going to be abit wierd as my granma is no longer with us but I'm sure we'll have a good jule-time anyway. Personally I'm so looking forward to the food and stuff and of course seeing the reactions to the gifts I give and what I get.

Other than that I've sorted the entertainment for the holiday as I've bought Batman The Dark Knight on Blu-Ray and Gears of War 2 plus my multiple reading materials.

Trick Or Treat: A Review

I started to play a little Guitar Hero 3 tonight after having a discussion about games, Nintendo and guitars with my friend Jesse. I Then got in the mood for some old school metal. So I fired up the old cult classic Trick Or Treat, a 1986 Metal Horror, on DVD.

I have watched that one like a least 10-15 times when I was a like 13, and I have had a soft spot for it ever since. Sure it's cheesy and very 80's and the plot ain't the greatest either but I still think it's awesome. And I don't really care what people think of me thinking that. I am after all a child of the 80's -early 90's. And the appearance of Gene Simmons and Ozzy Osbourne is cool too.

The movie is about a boy at a high school that's the target of bullies that love metal and is kinda worshipping the metal icon Sammi Curr and the rest as they say is history. I don't want to spoil it for those of you that haven't seen it. Because I think that you should watch it. it should be super cheap to get a hold of now. I payed like 3-4$ for it on DVD. And for if you like some good old 80's metal you'll enjoy this. I guess most people growing up during the late 80's have seen this at one halloween or other. It actually ran on tv here last year come to think of it on halloween. (Yeah halloween is somewhat celebrated here too)

Why haven't I posted anything for a while?

Well, I've started to work again, Parttime at the airport, and have been working quite abit lately. Only had time to get up in the mornings and watch the Countdown with Keith Olbermann podcasts before heading to work and in the evenings watch The Rachel Maddow Show podcasts and check the sites I frequent. During the days I've been having off I've caught up on my TV shows and house chores and shopped for food. But it's great to be working again after being on the dole for about 8 months.

Games I've played since the last blog. Well I haven't really had the energy to play much but I've played Doom on the 360, Pinball FX, Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix, the Portal Still Alive demo, The Sonic Unleashed demo and messed about with PlayStation Home. Home I kinda found "meh" so far, I don't see myself using that alot.

And reading... Well if reading blogs and news sites and such count.. I've read some. Same reason as all the other things.

But tonight I plan on playing something and maybe even read.

Hi there.

So this week I've seen two movies, not great movies but good movies. I watched Prison Block a.k.a.Animal and Cloverfield . I liked both movies but I cannot recommend buying them at full retail price, Bargain bin sure or rental. I wont say anything about what's in the movies as you can go rent them and see for yourself.

And I've played some Penny Arcade Episode 1 and some Pinball FX this week and tried some random demos off XBLA. Fun and entertaining and the PA game game me some good laughs.

In the reading department I'm going through the The Amazing Spider-Man Essential vol. 7. And random news and blogs online.

The Incredible Hulk

Movie Review

So tonight I've watched the lastest Hulk movie (on Blu-Ray) and as such I'll impart my thoughts about it.

A little qualifier: I used to read Hulk from time to time when I was a kid and I did watch some of the animated movies (you know those made for tv ones). I've seen the 1978 movie(way back when I was like 8 or 9) and I loved it all.

The movie does a great job of paying it's dues to the comics I read as a child and it captures the essence of Hulk. While I didn't have the same "Oh My God! This is epicly awesome!" as I had watching Iron Man it's great. The animation of Hulk are real well done and does bring forth the emotions inside Hulk. I can recommend watching it. And Edward Norton does a good job as Bruce Banner.

I am so glad Marvel has taken their movie development and production inhouse, it shows in the movies so far. I know that there are many more movies in production right now.

The Extras is quite good too and all in HD.

Minor spoilers below:

The cameos of Stan Lee and Lou Ferrigno was a real nice touch. And the end does hint at a larger picture within the Marvel universe.

I've been following the US president election actively for about 7-8 months and have been a Obama supporter from the start. I've been discussing it mainly with my friend Jesse in Chicago for about 3-4 months and also with my mother and some other buddies. And towards the end been watching/reading the news about it, plus watching Keith Olbermann.

Last night/ this morning, I was watching the election online on MSNBC.com. Very good election coverage in my opinion, and also funny at times. I had also caught Obama voting in Chicago live on tv earlier on NRK(Norway's BBC)at about 2:45-3pm. I watched the live stream from about 9pm to 6am(the latter half I just lay in bed watching on my laptop). I was really happy when he won and with that landslide.

I celebrated with a 4 hour nap and buying Obama's books; "The Audacity of Hope" and "Dreams From My Father". Going to read them this weekend I think. Now I feel my brain is about to short circuit. Probably either an early night or I'm going to fall asleep right here in front of the PC.

So this week I've read this:

Civil War is totally awesome! It had me totally enthralled while reading. And the artwork is fucking amazing! The craft that went into the comic book is astounding. I'm just waiting for the comic book shop to get Frontlines 1(I already have Frontlines 2) in so I can continue the read before heading into the individual hero stories. I recommend this series with all my nerdy heart. It's up there with Transmetropolitan and Watchmen.

Get Fuzzy is just a funny easy read that basically is about a man(Rob Wilco) and his dog(Satchel) and cat(Bucky) and the hilarity that can be. It's also a warm kinda sideways view into our society. You should at least check it out.

Star Wars.. Does it need introduction? Not really. Well what you're seing there is the first book in The Thrawn Trilogy, Heir To The Empire. And it deals with the aftermath of the movies. And possibly the coolest cat in the Empire, Grand Admiral Thrawn. I recommend this as read for anyone into Star Wars. Also to others but people familiar with Star Wars lore will get the most out of it.

So that's what I've read this week.

Mirror's Edge

Demo Thoughts

I downloaded the Mirror's Edge demo off the PSN last night and played it today. And here are my impressions on it.

The visuals are great albeit the sterile kind. Very clean. And one clean and tidy city, with the exceptions of the springboards, planks and such.

The gameplay actually works real well on the console. I was worried it would be awkward seing as first person point of view on a parkour/freerunning game is a brave move. I found it easy to play yet abit hard to master. Only thing that was abit hard to judge was that one place where you have to jump across to another building and land on the wall pipes. Hard to judge when to jump and the angle to jump.

While these things are positives I still don't see me throwing myself ass first to the game shop to buy it right away. I wasn't that blown away. Though it does seem like a good Zen game, the kind of game you can plug in to meditate to.

Did my hype for the game increase, decrease or end up at status quo? I'd say I feel like it made me move the game off the "got to have right away" list to the "get later" list. Having said that I still want the music which I really like.

Iron Man The Movie

Review

Disclaimer: I have recently gotten into reading Marvel and have not read the Iron Man comics, With the exception of having started on the Civil War series. And as such do not know if the movie treats the comics right.

Watched on Blu-Ray. Contain spoilers though no more than a regular trailer has.

Rated PG13 in the USA and in Norway rated for viewers 11 years or above.

Having said that I think this has to be the best superhero movie I've ever watched!

I sat down yesterday with the movie and a ton of popcorn and settled down to a evening/night of movie indulgance. Right off the bat I get the feeling of quality, with a great menu screen with a fully animated Iron Man doing various things and various pictures and such going over the screen on a cool fashion. Right.. Where was I? Ah! The movie!

The movie starts and the opening scene starts in a desert enviroment(the middle eastern kind) and you see a convoi of military vehicles is driving and the music kicks in. And I know I'm in for a treat for my musical taste, AC DC! And here the mayhem also begins. Tony Stark gets caught in a enemy attack and in the process gets injured and get capured. And this triggers the birth of Iron Man as it were.

Now moving away from telling the story, and move on to my thoughts. I was expecting a great deal out of this movie as I'd heard a lot of praise for it. And as such I was very excited to watch this.

And oh my fucking god! I was totally blown away!

I was having a blast watching this and thought it was done amazingly. The scenes were true to a comic book aestetic while being quite fresh. That being said comic books of this type, Marvel and DC (with their various branches), are quite a lot better in terms of laying out scenes than most movie directors tend to do. And the whole movie was a full on experience for start to finish. I was cheering, clapping, smiling and laughing. And to recap the music bit, this movie has a great score and great music.

I have to say Robert Downey Jr. did a fantastic job! Well so did the rest but he stood out above the rest.

One thing me and the girl at "my" comic book shop agreed on; We both love Tony Stark! And we both want one of them Iron Man suits for real. :-D

This is in short a total must-see!

And the extras on this is just awesome! everything in HD, non of that cheap "oh let's just pile the regular DVD stuff one there" crap. Everything done with a lot of care and respect much like the movie is.

A Small Nerd Update

So this is just a small resumé of what I've indulged in this last week.

I was at the comic book shop and picked up Get Fuzzy: The Dog Is Not A Toy (House Rule#4).

The Get Fuzzy comics

It's a real funny comic and I recommend it for everyone.

While I haven't played much since my last post I've been out and picked up some proper triggers for my PS3 controllers.

I got fed up with my fingers slipping off so I figured I'd fix that, and these things did! No more slipping off the controller and they are easy to move between controllers.

And for my 360 controller I bought the Messenger Kit cus I got fed up with having to use the controller to type/reply to my MSN contacts, or to get up to the pc everytime. Sure my PC is the next chair over from where I play my consoles but it's annoying to move in the middle of a game. And now I have two headsets for my 360 as well, one black that came with the 360 and one white that came with the kit.

And on the subject of games I've played this week. I've played a session of WoW, messed around a bit with Earthworm Jim 1, GH3 and tested some demoes.

And I propably saw the movie that lead to Heath Ledgers death last night. Candy. It's a really good movie and I recommend you all watch it. I say this probably lead to since from what i know Heath was a method actor.

Puzzle Quest: COTW Review

Played with expantion.

So I heard of this on the 2nd of september Annoyed Gamer, via the E3 Interview about Puzzle Quest Galatrix. I decided to give it a try, and tried the PC demo, which I like but I ended up getting it on the Xbox 360. I played it the last couple of weeks on and off during the days.

I have quite enjoyed the game and it's a cool little title. It's a good casual type game that's a Bejeweled/Tetris and Fantasy RPG type mix. AI can be a bit tricky, but it's good. And the puzzles can be quite a bitch to get through and survive. There's a modern day language used in the game for the most part. And Lord Bane took some tactics to beat.

I got all the achivements I set out to get(12 out of 14) and is now done with the game.

I can recommend it for anyone looking for a good casual title but if you don't like puzzle games stay away from it.

Civil War

I've started to read the Civil War comics from Marvel after I'd heard about it on Annoyed Gamer

I started with "The Road To Civil War" and will shortly read the "Civil War" comic. My version is the issue 1-7 collected into one paperback. It's totally awesome! Thank you Marcus for pointing me in that dircetion. :-) ...I love comics.. I really do.

My Gaming Life

So this week I've been playing my 360 alot, been kinda hooked on Puzzle Quest. I've got 8 out of 12 achivements on that and I've gained a few other ones. Played a little Gears Of War, the Penny Arcade Epi. 1 and some other stuff too. I did play my Wii a little with Zack&Wiki and some Wii Sports (which I haven't touched for months) and a little PS3 in the form of Star Wars The Force Unleashed and Guitar Hero 3. Not been like super hardcore but I've played more this week that before. But I love to play. Going to play alot in the coming days/weeks/months.

The Other Stuff

Other than that I've been working out twice in 4 days, doing 2 sessions (1H/45min) of strength and cardio. To get fitter, tone up and loose some weight/inches. I work with manuals (that I can adjust the weight on) and doing other stuff. Who knows, maybe I'll do a hints&tips video at a later time. (no garantee!)

And I've been following my fave podcasts, tv shows and such too. Listened to net radio, Some from Shout-cast.com and Bandit.se. And bought new shoes (about bloody time as I haven't bought new shoes since 05).

So that's a little update from me.

So I finally got it!

I ordered it from Here, based in New York

It took excactly 10 days for it to arrive in my mailbox and I saved 17,40$/12€ getting it from halfway across the planet. Wicked!

So how is it? For me as a fan I had goosebumps. And it delivered. Could just like The Ark of Truth have been longer but what the fuck, right? It's great to see it. And the extras are good too. And I can assure you europeans out there, even if the spec on the box says Region A, it plays on Region B BR players. My player is my PlayStation 3.

Now I need to get to work on completeing my Stargate Collection as I'm missing 3 seasons of Stargate SG-1 and all of Stargate Atlantis on DVD.

Today I got a message on my phone saying my XBOX 360 Elite had arrived. So I got dressed to withstand the gray and rainy day and hopped on the first bus into town. Which was abit disappointing since I need new sneakers (my old ones are like 3 years old). Anyway..

I wandered further into town and to the game shop and picked up my 360 with Gears Of War. And it's crazy, I payed exactly the same for my 360 that I did my Wii.

Then I strolled to one of the shopping centers and picked up a mini espresso maker and some coffee, to keep my braincells happy this weekend with some good tasting coffee.

And then I as quickly as possible got to the bus back home, just picking up some light food before heading home. I wanted to get home quick before the rain got crazy. Upon arrival I had to think out a good place. I decided one of the DVD shelves was good, so I rearranged that and figured out the signal paths to the tv and speakers. some more remote fiddleing now but that's just fun.

I am on the verge of getting one. Hopefully I'll get a phonecall abit later today that they've gotten my Elite in (I need the HDD space plus it's sexy black). I did find the game Kameo for 10$/6€ last week, which is a total bargain. I was in town yesterday and picked up the WiFi adaptor for it.

To all PC gamers out there let's fight DRM! Seriously! Why the fuck do they put it on games that we PAY for?! I have no problem with a game requireing an online verification before you can play it but DRM has got to go. I'm not going to share my games. Buy your own damn games! I did so can you!

What is DRM you ask? Well it is a limitation on how many times you can install a game. usually 3 times.Which is all kinds of fucked up. What if your maching has a major crash, or you decide to reformat and change OS? or for whatever other reason you need to reinstall it. Or if you buy a new computer and wants to continue playing there?

I have begun asking if a game has it before buying a game.

And to those that pirate games: FUCK OFF! And that applies to both those that uploads them and those that downloads them. YOU are the reason all this crap is dumped on us that buy it.

The Big House Clearing

So the last two days I've been at my late grandmom's house, that has now been taken over by my mom(and my stepdad). And now they are renovating it top to bottom. And in that regard I've been there to help them out abit.

My mom came and picked me up at about 12:30pm, then we went to the shop near here and picked up the needed food for the "project". Then we we took on the two hour drive there. Upon arrival we had a quick lunch and some coffee.

Then me and my mom went upstairs and sorted and tossed a shit load of stuff. Three bedrooms worth of furniture and old crap. Which mostly got tossed out the window. The end result looking abit like this:

Then we had another coffee break, With cake and simply had a breather. After the break was over me and my mom took the bags and put them ready to be put in the barn. Then we dragged&carried the rest down to the beach(not the white and sandy kind). Which was many walks up and down a steep kinda slippery hill. When we were done with that we sat down and had a breather, before we took all the bags up to the barn. Plus some other crap we took up there.

The we had dinner while waiting for the tide to go out. We had porkchops with potatoes and veggies and bernaise sauce. Yummy! Then we had almond pudding with raspberrysauce for dessert. Then chilled for a bit.

We(me, my mom and stepdad) went down to the beach and burned the old furniture. And looked out to the dark sea and and got some fresh air. The fire was kinda awesome.

Then we went back up at about 10:30pm and called it the night.

I slept alone in the house that night while they slept up in their caravan. Lay in bed playing Sudoku on the DS until I fell a sleep. Woke up at about 9:30am, went downstairs and made coffee and made a fire in the oven to heat the house back up. Had breakfast and such. Then we packed down the stuff, they didn't want and that my aunts and uncles might want from the living room and tossed away everything broken. I grabbed some of stuff that I brough home. Plus we moved the bed I slept in to a different room. to make space for future renovation plans.

Then we had dinner and rested for a bit. Then we went through the kitchen in the same manner as the living room. Plus we washed abit. Then at about 5pm me and my mom headed back into town.

I got back home at about 7pm and sat down at the pc right away. and put on the heat. And discovered the lighttube in the bath had gone, couldn't be arsed to go down to the shop and buy a new one. Too fucking tired to do anything. So my bath is lit with a tea candle, cosy but very dark.

Now just sitting on my arse and being online. My hand hurt abit, probably a minor stretch. Not going to do a damn thing now.

If we are to believe the salesfigures for the first half of the year, we are heading towards another record year for the norwegian games market.

Norsk Spill- og Mulitmediaforening (Norwegian Games&Multimedia assosiation) has delivered the turnover numbers from the games industry for the first half of 2008, and can brag about that as a whole the industry has had a increase of 16,6% compared to the same time period of last year.

Which makes the norwegian game market head to another record year. The industry has sold for 231 million NOK (about 41 million USD) during the first half of the year.

As per usual NSM has also published statistics over the various formats on the market, and the number show that the PlayStation 3 has taken the torch from the Playstation 2, which is the console that has sold the most games in this country.

Totally the PlayStation 3 has taken a 31% marketshare, while the X-Box 360 has 17,7% and the Wii has 14,2%. It is worth noticing that MicroSoft don't release their salesnumbers so the 360's real share is probably somewhat higher.

PC sales has had a marked downfall since last year, something that might be due to a lack of big titles (World of Warcraft Burning Crusade demolished all other competitors last year)

PC made up 15,2% of the norwegian market in sales. NSM only register sales over the counter and not the ever increasing digital download sales (Steam, Direct2Drive etc.)

Of the handheld systems the DS is leading the pack with a 9,5% of the total market. PSP is struggling hard with only 1,5%, while the old PS2 is still doing good with 11,2%.

Star Wars The Force Unleashed

The Demo

So today saw the release of the demo of Star Wars The Force Unleashed on the PSN and XBL.

I got it off the PSN as I own a Playstation 3.

I have played it abit and I'm really pleased with how it feels to play and the visuals are great. The game feels like the old Star Wars movies (Ep. 4-6) and the controls are tight. Having tried it I can say that my interest has gone from "this looks like a great game", to getting my Star Wars fangirl heart pumping. I have become truly stoked about it and I now want the game!

I'm going to play this demo some more though the weekend but I'll just arrive at the same point:

Watchmen

I saw the trailer for the movie about three weeks ago and I just had to read the comic before the movie hit. Yes I know I'm late for the party so to speak. And on that note I have to share my thoughts on it.

I am thoroughly surprised by the depth in this comic and how the story, that's set in a alternative reality 1985 U.S.A. (for the most part), resonate with the world today.It is a great commetary on the state of the world. Sure it's set in a sort of bizzaro reality it could well be happening here. I feel this is the best comic I've read since I read Transmetropolitan! And both address the "What the fuck is going on in the world?" question.

I spent many hours getting though it, mostly because I stopped many a time to admire the art style and work. And the articles, anecdotes and essay style writings between the chapters made this a really different read than any other comic I've read in my life. And it's been a long time since I've been this enthralled by a story. I've litterally spent this weekend getting through it and put away everything else.

This is a masterpiece! A must-read for anyone into reading. Actually this might turn you on to reading in general.

My one worry for the movie is that it will fall sort of capuring the essence and depth of both the characters and the story. But having read the comic I'm really looking forward to watching it. Plus it's co written by David Hayter, the man who wrote X-Men and has the voice of Solid Snake in the Metal Gear Solid games. So we'll see if he and his writing partner Alex Tse has the skills to bring this story to a movie form. And it's directed by Zach Snyder the man who did 300. I'll take a wait and see approach to the movie.

Now the comic has been polished up and put back in it's plastic protector and back into it's righfull place in my shelf. This is a comic I will take good care of.

Thoughts

The end of another week. Pretty uneventful week in my life. Nothing major happened.

Bought a new webcam which has some fun and useful features. Logitech Sphere MP. Will be using it to make videos (both silly and serious ones) and to keep in touch with friends out of town.

I've trained abit, working off those unwanted kilos/pounds and inches.

And played abit, Portal, and shooters for the most part.

Going to my cousin's kid's babtism this sunday. Going to be one of those meet the relatives and other people whom I don't know things. Free cake ;-)

So why am I here and why did I create this blogsite?

Well I wanted a place to write out what's on my mind and get stuff off my chest. And do it somewhere I can be my own moderator. To have full freedom in my ramblings as it were. And to improve on my writing skills.

Here I will over time publish my reviews, rants, thoughts, opinions and other stuff.
